On this safari we visit the premier parks and game reserves of Kenya and Tanzania. First we will head north to the lush forest of the Mount Kenya, where we will spend our time observing the many forest species that come to the waterhole.
From Mount Kenya, Mountain Lodge Serena, we head north to the famous Samburu/Buffalo Springs game reserves. Here we will experience the beautiful dry northern country which is home to wildlife only seen north of the equator: namely Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe. Other residents are gerenuk gazelle, the Somali ostrich, the 'big five' and the more common savannah game.
From Samburu our journey now heads back south to Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its spectacular bird life.
We then head on to Masai Mara, justifiably one of the most famous reserves in Africa. With good reason as this is the Kenyan section of the Serengeti Plains and wildlife abounds. It is also traditionally the land of the nomadic Masai people. While on game drives, you will often notice young tribesmen herding their cattle amongst the plains game. The Mara is 1,510sq km of open grassland dotted with the distinctive flattopped acacia trees. It is watered by the tree-lined Mara River and its tributary the Talek River. The western border of the park is the spectacular Oloololo Escarpment, a difficult part of the Mara to access because of the swampy grounds. The concentration of game is at its highest in the months of July through October when the Mara is host to the annual migration of more than 2 million wildebeest.
To break up the long drive day from the Masai Mara to Serengeti National Park we head to Speke Bay for a night. From Speke Bay we head into Serengeti National Park, which takes its name from a Masai word meaning 'endless plain'. This 14,763sq km park encompasses lakes, savannah grassland, wooded hills, rivers, swamps and volcanic massifs and is home to a wide array of wildlife. The Serengeti is home to over 2 million wildebeest, half a million Thomson's gazelle and a quarter of a million zebra, giraffe, eland, topi, kongoni, impala and other antelope, in addition to predators such as the lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.
We then head to Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcano that is the largest, unbroken caldera in the world. The crater is home to elephant, buffalo, hyena, jackal, eland, hartebeest, black rhino, waterbuck, hippo, black-manned lion and leopard. The crater is also populated with birdlife: ostriches, kori bustards, secretary birds, white egrets, red-billed ox-pickers, crested cranes and lesser flamingos.
We head to Lake Manyara National Park, situated on the western slopes of the Rift Valley with the lake spanning 390sq kms. Lake Manyara boasts a wondrous array of birdlife, along with herds of buffalo and elephant.
The itinerary finishes off with a visit to Amboseli National Park which boasts the best views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and some fantastic wildlife before heading back to Nairobi.

Day 1: Nairobi
You will be met off your flight by a representative. The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is located 20kms from the capital city, Nairobi. The temperatures are warm and moderate. It is inhabited by more than 2,000,000 people of all races offering a wide variety of different cultures. Overnight at the Nairobi Safari Club on bed and breakfast.
Day 2: Mount Kenya National Park
Commence your safari at 9am and drive north to Mount Kenya National Park at the Mountain Lodge Serena in time for lunch. Day 3: Samburu Game Reserve
After breakfast continue north to Samburu Game Reserve arriving in time for lunch. Afternoon game drive in the area. Samburu Game Reserve lies in the lower curve of the dry northern Kenya region. The main water source, the Uaso Nyiro River, feeds the riverine forest and swamps. The patches of forest and doum palm dotting the landscape provide an ideal setting for primates, hippo and crocodile. Elephant families visit the river's shallows to immerse in the cool water. Day 6: Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast we depart to Lake Nakuru National Park via Nyahururu Falls, arriving for lunch. In the afternoon proceed on a game drive along the lakeshores. Lake Nakuru National Park was created in 1961, and since then the park has increased considerably in size and now covers and area of 200sq km. The lake lies in the park and has been given the conservation world's Ramsar Site designation. It is a shallow soda lake, and is the most famous of the Great Rift Valley lakes with "the world's greatest ornithological spectacle". There is the opportunity of viewing over thousands of flamingos along with tens of thousands of other bird species. There are areas of grassland, bush, forest and rocky cliffs and there are many other animals to be viewed: white rhino, the rare Rothchild's giraffe, waterbucks, warthogs, large herds of buffalo, Thomson's gazelle, leopard, hyrax, hippos and many more animals. Serengeti National Park:
Serengeti, meaning ' endless plain' in the Maasai language, is the largest National Park in Tanzania. Besides the thousands of resident wildlife that permanently reside in the park such as impalas, gazelles, topis, hyenas, Serengeti National Park supports the stunning annual Great Migration with 1.5 million wildebeest and half a million zebra and gazelle crossing the vast landscape year round. Their movement takes them to all corners of the Serengeti from December to July until they reach Masai Mara in Southern Kenya .
Masai Mara:
The most recognized National Park in Kenya, Masai Mara hosts the wildebeest and zebra migration from July to November from Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania. The rest of the year, Masai Mara is home to predators like the black-manned lion, leopards, cheetahs, rare wild dogs and its thousands of prey.
Ngorongoro Crater:
With Crater walls as high as 2,000 ft. in an area of 120 sq. miles, the crater is frequently referred to "Africa's Garden of Eden". Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic crater on earth and home to a spectacular concentration of wildlife.
Lake Manyara National Park:
This "Paradise of Wildlife" supports over 400 species of birds, great swathes of flamingo and a boisterous community of hippos. If lucky, you may get to see lion on trees, a characteristics mostly found in Lake Manyara National Park.
Arusha National Park:
A sanctuary for the rare Black and White Colobus Monkeys is host to majestic Mt. Meru, the fifth highest mountain in Africa at 15,000 ft. Arusha National Park has many alkaline lakes which homes the beautiful pink flamingos.
Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya:
The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's finest wildlife reserve. Everything about this reserve is outstanding. The wildlife is abundant and the gentle rolling grasslands ensure that animals are never out of sight. Birds, too, are prolific. Including migrants, well over 450 species have been recorded, among them, 57 species of birds of prey. The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well-spread rainfall year round. Rain, when it falls almost always chooses the late afternoon or night. Between July and October, when the great wildebeest migration is in the Masai Mara National Reserve, the sensation is unparalleled. Masai Mara is one of the best plains' game reserve where you can actually encounter a live Discovery Channel, a haven for viewing a congregation of all sorts of animals in a five-mile radius: A pride of lions can be spotted ready to make a run for a gazelle, a cheetah and its cub taking a nap on a rock, a pair of ostriches walking the open stretches of the savannah or a gazelle giving birth.
The Masai Mara National Reserve lies about 270 kilometers from Nairobi, and takes about 4 to 5 hours by road. There are scheduled flights, twice daily from Wilson Airport Nairobi, which take about 40 - 45 minutes. The reserve is about 1510 square kilometers having been reduced from 1672 square kilometers in 1984. However, the wildlife is far from being confined within the reserve boundaries, and an even larger area, generally referred to as the "dispersal area" extends north and east of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Maasai communities live within the dispersal area with their stock but a century of close association with the wildlife has resulted in an almost symbiotic relationship where wildlife and people live in peace with one another. The first sight of this natural wonderland is breathtaking. Here the great herds of shuffling elephants browse among the rich tree-studded grasslands with an occasional sighting of a solitary and ill-tempered rhino.
Thomson's and Grant's gazelle, Topi and Eland and many more species of plains' game offer a rich choice of food for the dominant predators; lion, leopard and cheetah which hunt in this pristine wilderness. In the Mara River, hippo submerges at the approach of a vehicle only to surface seconds later to snort and grumble their displeasure. Seemingly, the drowsy crocodile sunbathe on the riverbanks, mouth agape, waiting with subtle cunning for prey at which to strike with lightning swiftness. But this richness of fauna, this profusion of winged beauty and the untouched fragility of the landscape, are all subordinate to the Mara's foremost attraction, the march of the wildebeest.
Each year, far south in the great vastness of the Serengeti, the wildebeest raise their dignified but quaint heads, sniff the air and, as if by one accord, start the long trek to the Kenya border and the Masai Mara National Reserve. After exhausting the grazing in Tanzania's northern Serengeti, a large number of wildebeest and zebra enter the Masai Mara National Reserve around the end of June drawn by the sweet grass raised by the long rains of April and May. It is estimated that more than half a million wildebeest enter the Masai Mara National Reserve and are joined by another 100,000 from the Loita Hills east of the Masai Mara. Driving in the midst of these great herds is an unimaginable experience. Whilst the eyes feast on the spectacle, the air carries the smells, the dust and the sounds of hundreds of thousands of animals. There is nowhere else on earth to compare with this wildlife marvel. But the trek is costly. The herds' draw ravening packs of predators, especially hyenas and lions, and thousands of the lame, laggard and sick never complete the cycle. More die, by drowning or by the teeth of the cunning crocodile, while trying to cross the swirling muddy waters of the Mara and Talek rivers. Once the Masai Mara National Reserve's grass has been devoured and when fresh rain in Tanzania has brought forth a new flush there, the herds turn south, heading hundreds of kilometers back to Serengeti and the Ngorongoro plains. There the young are dropped in time to grow sufficiently strong to undertake the long march north six months later.
Although July, August and September are the months when the Masai Mara plains are filled with migrating wildebeest and zebra, there is much resident wildlife year round. Apart from the better-known species there are numerous opportunities to add some of the rare and less frequently seen animals to the visitor's checklist. In the southwestern sector, you may be lucky enough to see roan antelope, a handsome creature regrettably rare countrywide. Bat-eared foxes peer from their burrows and there are thousands of topi, an antelope not found in other major parks save Tsavo National Park. The combination of a gentle climate, scenic splendor and untold numbers of wildlife makes the Masai Mara Kenya's most popular inland destination park.
A well worth it and recommended activity in the Masai Mara National Reserve is the hot air balloon safari. Early in the morning, you will be woken and driven to the departure site. Once in the air, the view of the surrounding landscape, the rising of the sun between the mountains and the congregation of the animals at the river is beautiful. This all concludes with a champagne breakfast and memories of a lifetime.

The Serengeti National Park is broadly divided into three distinct areas, the Seronera Valley and Seronera River, the Western Corridor and the Northern Lobo area that extends northwards through the Lamai Wedge to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.
Heart of the Serengeti - Seronera Valley
The greatest proportion of tourist on Serengeti Safari visit the Serengeti through its Southern entrance, the Naabi Hill Gate, which opens onto the Seronera Valley; a vibrant wildlife area at the heart of the Serengeti. This is the region in which the migration commonly stop to calve in march each year, however the Seronera region is characterized by mainly wide open grassy plains and rock kopjes, patched together within a network of rivers that ensure year-round water supplies and keep this region incredibly rich in wildlife throughout the year. All other areas of the Serengeti are more seasonal and much of the time wildlife viewing is dependent on the path of the migration.
The Western Corridor
This follows the path of the Grumeti River up towards Lake Victoria. This region provides superb wildlife viewing action when the migration crosses the crocodile infested waters of the Grumeti; at this point camps such as the Grumeti River or Kirawira come into their own. It is also possible to arrange mobile camping in this region in order to optimize sightseeing your location. The Northern Reaches – Lobo to Wogakuria: The Northern reaches of the Serengeti remain fantastically quiet and unvisited, due to their relative inaccessibility. Previously inaccessible swathes of National Park at Wogakuria, close to the Masai Mara border, have been opened up by flying safari options staying at superb permanent tented camps such as Sayari. This region has been described as ultimate paradise for keen safari buffs.
The principal feature of the Serengeti is its stunning wildlife and the annual spectacle of the migration of millions of zebra and wildebeest in pursuit of water and food in response to the changing seasons.
